Recent changes to the website and a brief update

This post should've been made earlier, but I was unable to figure out what to write exactly... It took too long so I'll just improvise what I'm writing.

Anyways. After getting the server back up and running some weeks ago people were pretty thrilled, yet I still didn't have any major plans for the future besides fixing the mess and getting it back running. I wanted to make sure everything is absolutely stable and perfect so that I didn't have to feel like I didn't try. By now I am completely aware that this isn't everything that's important as the server is still dead and it's already taking me way too much time to finish what I'm working on.

New minimal donation amount

I had to increase the minimal donator status amount to $5 and the minimal amount for a name change to $2 because the price for hosted tab increased a lot over time (by 40%).

Don't forget that all donations are welcome, but because of small donations having a high fee (see http://samp-funserver.com/news/119-important-note-about-regular-donations for more information) I had no other choice.

Server unreachable (updated!)

Updated! Please read this important news article before asking any questions. The old post can be found after the break.

I've always been afraid of causing false hope due to personal reasons that I won't go into detail with, but it's safe to say that I want to be very certain about something before turning it into an announcement or official statement. Please read the original post (below the page break) first if you haven't seen it before.

In August this year I was 100% certain that I've had enough time to debate what I wanted to do with R-FS in the future... The decision that I wanted to close down the server was certain and thought out. I did everything I felt that was necessary to make sure I wouldn't make up my mind and regret it. Things like the fact that nobody seemed to notice when the server was down for months is a great example. Another one is that I've made sure to discuss the issue with Miracoli multiple times.

Originally it was pretty clear that there would be some replies to this announcement related to people wanting to keep the forums online, or reacting in a personal and heart touching way. This was not a surprise at all... But I never expected so many people to respond to what I thought were the dead remains of a once great community. Of course it wasn't easy to make this decision and it didn't help one bit how bad I felt after reading the many comments on the forums.

Now, I did mention how I wouldn't get rid of any website or game server files simply because the amount of time spent on it is in no way replacable, and it is part of the history of R-FS. Everything must be archived, but people clearly wanted to have access to it. I refuse paying for expensive hosting (okay, it's not that expensive, but with so little activity it isn't worth it...), so I silently transfered the website over to my local server. A fair amount of setting up and configuring things lead me to a case where I'll be able to amortise the hosting account all together. Everything I need is a 13 euro/year domain name (www.samp-funserver.com, because I don't want to lose that or change it risking more people to leave). The website itself is within my hands now, and the domain name is currently renewed for one year and vailid until September the 12th of 2016! laughing

I want to thank gtasarules14 a million times for giving me the motivation and the required money to renew the domain name so that the website can stay up for another year. We've had daily conversations for a week or so, and it really helped a lot. Seeing how much people want the site to be up was something I can't ignore. But it doesn't stop there... You may notice that a lot of things are working again that were broken since forever, including the webstats stuff and the loading speeds. This is also made possible because of extremely long sessions where I've worked on the problems and asked some help from a great collegue who wanted to spend some private time looking at it with me.

The reminder of people still caring for the server, how much gtasarules14 and the forum posts by a large chunk of the regular members shared their interest in R-FS and the ability to have people help me with problems I never thought were solvable without dedicating months of work towards it are what made me active again. I really have no idea about the future of the server, and since I mentioned the part about false hope at the beginning of the post for a good reason I won't go into much detail right now... but this story definitely has a next chapter.

I'll be doing stuff when I can and hopefully I can get it clear to myself this time. Please spead the word to everybody who played here or posts/posted on the forums recently! They must know that the source of R-FS will remain publically accessible and updated when nececarry.

Thanks for reading this!

Server IP change

The IP address of the server has been changed due to some events related to the hosting. You can read the full forum post about this here.

You can find the new IP-address in the little box on the left of the homepage.

Important note about 'regular donations'

Hello everyone. This is an important notification regarding all R-FS players who regularly donate for the server. If you are somebody who's donated for R-FS multiple times in the past, please make sure to read this message if you plan on donating again in the future!

First of all I would like to thank everybody for every single donation, whether it was just a few cents or big amounts above €10-,! They're all appreciated equally and you should never forget that these donations are required to keep the server running. Without them, R-FS would have never made it this far and I think the same thing applies to back when the server was still owned by Garsino.

So, now let me jump to the main reason why I'm writing this post: even though all donations are just as important, there is something to note about them that probably many of you don't know. PayPal, just like many other (online) financial services, has some sort of transaction fees. The nice thing about PayPal is that the fees are actually very low compared to many alternatives. You might ask why I'm writing this post after admitting that the fees aren't all that high...

Everybody who has been playing on this server for a while knows that the minimal donation amount is just €1,- to receive donator status. The donator status includes many special and unique features that you can enjoy for as long as the server exists. The cheap donator status price is what allows many people to donate for their friends, and that's what has allowed me to pay for the server hosting, website and hosted tab ever since the beginning.

Now it's time for me to answer the qustion in the third paragraph of this post. The PayPal transaction fees are relatively low, but this is only true for larger donations. With €1,- donations (required for donator status or name changes), about 40 cents go to PayPal instead of going to my account. This means that if I get 20 €1,- donations this month, I only end up having €12,-. Even though it may not sound like a big deal, there are actually quite some people who donate €1,- very regularly. Lately it has been very hard for me to pay the R-FS bills because my PayPal account has been nearly empty for about a month.

So please, if you already know that you are going to donate for multiple people, or you're simply donate multiple times just to support the server, save up the donations for a bit and transfer the total amount in one go. :) It really helps out a lot. Just specifiy multiple names when you're requesting donator status and/or name changes for people.

Hopefully there'll be enough donations to renew hosted tab, because the month is almost over and I only have a fraction of the required €9,- on my PayPal account. Hosted tab really helps bumping up the player count.

Thanks for reading this and for the support!
